The client

TotalEnergies is a global integrated energy company operating across oil, gas, renewables and low-carbon energy. The Culzean field — a high-pressure, high-temperature gas condensate field in Block 22/25a of the UK Central North Sea, around 230km off the coast of Aberdeen – is one of its most technically demanding UK assets, supplying approximately 5% of the UK’s total gas demand. The project was managed by PBS North Sea, a specialist consortium providing integrated maintenance, operations and construction services to TotalEnergies across its North Sea portfolio.

The requirement

PBS required a 2″ full bore Double Block and Bleed valve in Super Duplex for the Culzean installation. The specification was precise: an exact face-to-face dimension of 410mm, flanged vent connections only (no screwed connections permitted), and material compliance to NACE MR-01-75 / ISO 15156 throughout. CE marking was required to PED Category 3, Module H. All components required NDE and PMI, with extended hydrostatic and gas testing witnessed by an independent third party, and full documentation traceable to mill. The order had to be delivered in eight weeks.

What Colson supplied?

Colson manufactured every major component in-house at its Rotherham facility – bodies, flanges, bonnets and cavity plugs — machined under one roof to maintain the close tolerances and full material traceability the project demanded. The three-piece modular DBB valve was built to Colson’s DMB series in a Ball / Bolted Needle / Ball configuration, with a 38mm full bore, Super Duplex trim throughout (ASTM A182 F55 / UNS S32760), PEEK seats, and a lockable lever operator with anti-tamper T-Bar vent. The 410mm face-to-face was achieved exactly as specified. Extended testing was completed and witnessed, documentation was supplied to project-specific requirements with complete 3.1 traceability, and the valve was CE marked to the required category. The order was delivered within the eight-week programme.

The result

PBS North Sea received a fully compliant valve that met every technical, material and programme requirement – on time, with no concessions to the specification.
