The client

BP’s Clair Ridge development sits 75 kilometres west of the Shetland Islands and represents the second phase of one of the largest oil fields on the UK Continental Shelf, designed to recover an estimated 640 million barrels of oil. Engineering services for this project were provided by Wood, a global consulting and engineering company with extensive North Sea experience.

The requirement

Wood required in-house manufactured 2″ and ¾” DBB valves in A182 F44/6Mo material for the Clair Ridge platform, with hub inlet and outlet connections to BP G-Lok specification. The valves had to comply with BP’s GIS engineering standards and meet a double O-ring dynamic and static sealing design. Two qualification programmes were required: fire testing to the 2022 revision of ISO 10497 and low-temperature testing to EEMUA 192 and GIS-62-016 at -46°C – both witnessed by Lloyd’s Register. Material was sourced to Norsok standards to meet BP’s GIS material specification.

What Colson supplied?

Colson manufactured 2″ GR16 DBB valves at both 19mm and 50mm bore, rated to Class 1500lbs. Hub end licences were coordinated and test hubs procured to meet the G-Lok connection requirement. The elastomeric double O-ring sealing design was developed and qualified in-house to meet BP’s GIS specifications. Both the fire test and low-temperature qualification were conducted at Colson’s in-house test facility under Lloyd’s Register witness, with liquid nitrogen used for the cryogenic testing programme. All materials were fully traceable to Norsok standards and supported by comprehensive documentation.

The result

BP and Wood received a fully qualified, documented valve solution meeting every element of a demanding specification – materials, sealing design, fire performance, and low-temperature qualification – all managed and tested under one roof. At the close of the project, BP’s Supply Chain Manager wrote to the Colson team:

“On behalf of the BP Contract Supply Chain Team I would like to take this opportunity to extend our thanks and appreciation to you and your team for their unwavering hard work and support. We are acutely aware that without the high calibre support structure such as suppliers like yourselves, we would be unable to deliver to the standards required by our client.”

Built on trust and integrity

Our reputation is built on consistently doing what we say we will. We give realistic lead times, flag problems early, and deliver what we promise. It sounds straightforward, but in industries where supply chain failures are common, it makes a real difference. That is why our customers come back to us, project after project, year after year.
